The pomegranate is the fruit of the pomegranate tree, a beautiful ornamental tree with scarlet flowers, native to Persia. It lives a very long time and some specimens would have lived for two centuries in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. It has been harvested since ancient times all around the Mediterranean, as well as in Central Asia. Its thirst-quenching juice was very popular with commercial caravans crossing the desert. The Egyptians fermented it to obtain a heady wine.

Grenada took hold in the Caribbean Islands and Latin America with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.

In ancient Egypt, this fruit was seen as a symbol of ambition or prosperity.
