It owes its origin to the Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner (in fact, in Swiss German this product is called birchermuesli, from the name of the doctor and muesli literally meaning "mash").
The story goes that Dr. Bircher composed his recipe at the beginning of the last century after meeting in the high mountains a very alert shepherd, despite his great age, and after having shared his meal.
The meal consisted of wheat crushed in milk, accompanied by a few hazelnuts and an apple, sweetened with honey. Initially best known in “health” circles and among mountain enthusiasts, muesli now has a multitude of variations and occupies an important place in our diet.
